Sri Lanka ETA and visa: how to apply before you fly

Most visitors to Sri Lanka need permission to enter before they travel, either an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) or a visa. The rules, fees and the list of countries that qualify have changed several times in recent years, so always check the official source before you book flights.

Where to apply

Apply only through the official Sri Lanka Department of Immigration and Emigration ETA website: www.eta.gov.lk. It shows the current fees, eligible nationalities and processing times. Be careful with look-alike websites that charge extra service fees.

What to have ready

  • A passport valid for at least six months from your arrival date
  • Your arrival date and flight details
  • The address of your first night's accommodation (we can give you this if we have arranged your hotels)
  • A card to pay the fee online, where a fee applies

When to apply

Apply a few weeks before you travel and keep a printed or digital copy of your approval to show on arrival.

We cannot apply for an ETA or visa on your behalf, but we are happy to answer questions about your arrival. Last reviewed: October 2026. Rules can change at any time; the official website always takes precedence.
